The Digest:
The City Boy Movement, a support group for President Bola Tinubu, has addressed the looting of palliative materials during its South-East sensitization rally in Owerri, Imo State, on Saturday. Items meant for distribution including food, phones, sewing machines, grinders, shuttle buses, deep freezers, wheelchairs, smartphones, generator sets, laptops, cash grants, farming kits, and fertilizers were displayed at Heroes Square for beneficiaries from Abia, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu states. As distribution commenced, trouble erupted with the crowd surging forward, leading to a stampede. While many attributed the incident to hunger in the country, the Movement's spokesperson, Chief Uche Nworah, claimed "unidentified individuals suddenly stormed the venue and began carting away items meant for the empowerment programme," creating panic and a stampede. He described the negative spin on the incident as "unfortunate," emphasizing the programme's positive intentions to support and empower young people, traders, and vulnerable populations across the South-East.
