A CNG-powered car explosion at a NIPCO station in Edo State injured three individuals, highlighting safety concerns in Nigeria’s push toward CNG vehicle conversions. The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative urges vehicle owners to use accredited centers, as authorities investigate this incident involving unapproved CNG components.

On Thursday, a compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle exploded at a NIPCO filling station on Benin-Auchi Road in Edo State, injuring multiple people. According to witnesses, at least three individuals were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for treatment. Among those injured were a passenger from another vehicle, a pump attendant, and an additional employee at the station. The explosion occurred when the driver of an Audi 80, converted to run on CNG, arrived with a technician to test the newly installed system.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) later confirmed the explosion, stating that the vehicle had been “illegally modified” with components that were not approved for CNG use. PCNGI officials emphasized the importance of using accredited centers for vehicle conversions, noting that only certified facilities can ensure safety and compliance with regulations. They also highlighted the upcoming launch of the Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System to oversee and regulate conversion practices.
