The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) retracted its statement about Starlink's subscription price hike, claiming it was issued in error. Initially, the NCC had stated that Starlink announced price changes without regulatory approval but later clarified that the announcement was premature and requested media outlets to disregard the initial statement.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has retracted its earlier statement concerning Starlink’s recent subscription price increase, which suggested the company lacked regulatory approval for the hike. This clarification follows comments made by Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s director of public affairs, who expressed surprise at Starlink’s announcement.

Initially, Muoka stated that while Starlink had filed a request to adjust its pricing, the NCC had not yet approved it. He indicated that the company's decision to announce price changes before receiving a response from the commission appeared to violate Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003, as well as the conditions of Starlink’s license regarding tariff adjustments.

However, shortly after the backlash, Muoka requested that media outlets disregard the previous statement, labeling it as “issued in error.” He urged those who had published the announcement to retract it from their platforms.

The confusion comes at a time when telecommunications stakeholders in Nigeria have been advocating for price increases in the sector, citing that rates have not changed in over a decade. This situation underscores the ongoing challenges within Nigeria's telecommunications industry, as companies seek to maintain operational viability amid regulatory scrutiny and economic pressures.
