A Lagos-based NYSC corps member faces threats from the NYSC board after criticizing President Tinubu’s government over rising living costs. In a viral TikTok video, she decried inflation and poor living conditions, later receiving calls from officials demanding she take down the post.
A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos has raised concerns over alleged threats from NYSC officials following a social media post where she criticized the government’s handling of the economy.
The corps member, whose video went viral on TikTok, expressed frustration over the rising cost of essential commodities, lamenting that her monthly allowance barely covers basic expenses. She questioned the government’s role in addressing inflation, citing skyrocketing prices of food items, electricity bills, and transportation costs.
In her emotional video, she remarked, “If more Nigerians speak up about what we are facing, maybe the government will take action. Prices increase every week, and it’s becoming unbearable.” She also described the NYSC scheme as financially unsustainable, noting that her transportation costs often exceed her stipend.
Barely a day after posting the video, the corps member shared a follow-up clip, revealing that she had received multiple calls from NYSC officials demanding she take down her post. In a recorded call, an official was allegedly heard reprimanding her, questioning her decision to criticize the administration.
The situation has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many users voicing support for her concerns while others argue that NYSC members should remain apolitical.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the NYSC spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
