two women jailed (1).webp
A repeat offender and another woman have been sentenced to one year in prison for hawking naira notes in Lagos — part of EFCC’s renewed push to curb currency abuse.
  • Folake Adeoti (an ex-convict) and Modupe Adewuyi were caught selling Naira notes totalling over ₦5.4m.
  • Arrested along Jobi Fele Way, Ikeja, with large sums in ₦500 and ₦1,000 denominations.
  • Both pleaded guilty and had their POS machines and cash forfeited to the federal government.
  • Adeoti had no option of a fine due to her prior conviction.
  • Adewuyi was allowed to pay a ₦500k fine instead of jail time.
This isn’t just about two women with bundles of cash — it’s about public trust in Nigeria’s fragile currency system. The EFCC says selling Naira notes fuels abuse, distortion, and cash scarcity. But with the same laws rarely applied to elite offenders, many online are asking: where’s the balance in justice? For everyday hustlers, the consequences seem far steeper.

Currency hawking remains illegal — but should the penalties be this harsh for low-level offenders? Nigerians are talking.
