NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada clarified that only the President can extend the CG’s tenure and urged the public to rely on official channels for accurate updates.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dismissed as false the reports about an alleged tenure extension for its Comptroller General, Adewale Adeniyi. In a statement issued on April 1, 2025, Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, clarified that the claims regarding the tenure extension were misleading. He explained that the President holds the exclusive authority to appoint or extend the tenure of the Customs boss, by the NCS Act 2023 and public service regulations.

Maiwada further emphasized that no official communication had been received from the appropriate government channels regarding such a decision. He urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and only rely on accurate, official information provided through authorized government sources.

The NCS spokesman reassured stakeholders that the service remains focused on fulfilling its statutory responsibilities, including trade facilitation, revenue generation, and ensuring border security. He also highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing customs operations, strengthening inter-agency cooperation, and contributing to national economic growth. The NCS reiterated its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and its service to the nation.
