Umar Damagum, acting PDP chairman, warned party leaders that personal ambitions are undermining the party’s unity and its future. He stressed the importance of resolving internal conflicts to offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the APC. BoT chairman Adolphus Wabara echoed concerns about the PDP’s leadership crisis.
The acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, recently addressed concerns over the party's internal turmoil during a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting held at the national secretariat in Abuja. Damagum emphasized the importance of unity within the party, warning leaders against allowing their ambitions to create further division.
He expressed concern that some PDP leaders were undermining his authority by engaging with members of the National Working Committee (NWC) without his knowledge. Damagum stressed that Nigeria’s current political climate, marked by economic difficulties, has made the need for a strong opposition more critical than ever. The PDP, according to Damagum, must remain united to provide an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his remarks, Damagum cautioned that any attempt to escalate the party’s internal conflicts for personal gain would be detrimental to the party’s future. He urged leaders to reflect on the party’s importance and to work toward its long-term unity. Damagum also assured the BoT that a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting would be held in February, with preparations for zonal congresses already underway.
Adolphus Wabara, BoT chairman, also voiced his disappointment over the party's internal struggles, reinforcing the need for fair and transparent processes in the upcoming congresses. He concluded by urging all leaders to prioritize the party’s survival over personal interests.
