Boko Haram militants attacked a military base in Malam-Fatori, Borno, killing a battalion commander and 19 soldiers. The assault follows similar attacks in Borno, including the killing of 20 fishermen in Bama. The ongoing insurgency demands urgent action from the Nigerian government and military to restore stability.
In another devastating blow, suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants attacked a military base in Malam-Fatori, Borno State, on Friday, January 24, 2025. The assault left 20 military personnel dead, including a battalion commander, two senior officers, and 17 soldiers.
Sources revealed that the insurgents arrived in heavily armed convoys, overpowering the 149 Battalion after hours of intense combat. Several buildings and vehicles were destroyed during the attack, and many soldiers were injured or declared missing. Survivors reportedly fled the base, seeking safety in nearby areas.
The attack follows a similar incident in Damboa’s Sabon Gari community weeks earlier, where the same terror group overran another military base, leaving multiple casualties.
Adding to the turmoil, insurgents launched an attack on Gadan Gari, a fishing community in Bama, earlier this week. The assault claimed at least 20 lives as gunmen opened fire on fishermen, forcing locals to flee.
This latest violence underscores the resurgence of militant activity in Borno State, where communities have experienced sporadic peace amid ongoing security challenges.
The federal government and military face mounting pressure to address these escalating threats and ensure the safety of civilians and security personnel. Local leaders and residents are calling for more decisive action to combat insurgency and restore stability to the region.
