Investigative journalist David Hundeyin alleges MKO Abiola amassed wealth through illicit means, sparking controversy over Nigeria's political history and legacy.

David Hundeyin, a Nigerian investigative journalist, recently sparked controversy with allegations concerning the late MKO Abiola's wealth accumulation and methods. Speaking on a podcast by Noble Nigeria, Hundeyin claimed that Abiola, much like other prominent figures including Bola Tinubu, amassed his fortune through illicit means. He accused Abiola of involvement in various illegal activities such as gun running, coup financing, and fraudulent contracts, which allegedly contributed to his substantial wealth.

Abiola, known for his role in Nigerian politics and business, was a pivotal figure during the country's transition from military rule to democracy in the 1990s. His presidency bid in the 1993 elections, widely regarded as Nigeria's freest and fairest until annulled by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, was a watershed moment in Nigerian history. Despite international and domestic support, Abiola faced imprisonment and, eventually, his sudden death in 1998 under contentious circumstances.

Hundeyin's allegations have ignited a firestorm on social media, with reactions split between condemnation and support. Supporters argue that Hundeyin's claims are substantiated by historical evidence and call for a critical reevaluation of Abiola's legacy. Critics, however, defend Abiola's reputation as a symbol of democracy and question the timing and motives behind Hundeyin's assertions.
