The Defense Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a stark warning following the recent wave of bombings in Borno State, describing the attacks as a sign of Nigeria descending into a state of war. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, delivered a somber statement on Tuesday, recounting the harrowing events that unfolded in Gworza Local Government Area over the weekend.
"These despicable acts are a clear response to our recent successes in ongoing military operations," Major General Buba asserted. "Our operations have severely weakened the terrorist leadership, depleted their resources, and diminished their influence."
The terror attacks, characterized by multiple Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (PBIEDs), commenced with a female suicide bomber striking a wedding reception at Mararaba Hausari Street around 3:00 PM. Shortly after, a second explosion occurred at 5:00 PM in the same vicinity as efforts to aid the initial casualties were underway. Tragically, a third explosion targeted troops enforcing a curfew, claiming the lives of a soldier and two hybrid forces members.
Despite the imposition of a curfew to protect civilians, a fourth potential attack was thwarted as the suspect prematurely detonated her device, resulting in her own demise. In total, the bombings resulted in 20 fatalities and left 52 individuals injured, receiving urgent medical treatment.
Major General Buba emphasized the military's commitment to viewing every loss of life, whether civilian or military, as a profound tragedy. "These cowardly attacks are meant to project strength amidst their declining capabilities," he remarked, urging citizens to remain vigilant and united in support of the armed forces.
