Nigerian activist Deji Adeyanju used satire to critique INEC’s credibility, suggesting the commission could "save" U.S. candidate Kamala Harris in her presidential race. Adeyanju’s humorous take highlights ongoing concerns about Nigeria's electoral transparency following the controversial 2023 elections.
In a recent social media post, Nigerian activist Deji Adeyanju employed satire to critique Nigeria’s electoral processes by suggesting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could "save" U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in her presidential race against Donald Trump. Adeyanju’s post on X (formerly Twitter) joked that “INEC can still save Kamala. What INEC cannot do does not exist. They can switch off the server or change results on IREV,” referencing the controversial handling of Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, which faced allegations of fraud and lack of transparency.
Adeyanju’s statement poked fun at perceived flaws in Nigeria’s election system, such as delayed result uploads and alleged tampering, which drew heavy criticism from both local and international observers, including the European Union. His sarcastic remark alluded to the ongoing U.S. election, where Trump currently leads with 266 electoral votes, while Harris lags with 219, suggesting an improbable scenario where INEC intervenes to tip the scale.
