Atiku Abubakar blames APC for Nigeria's economic and security issues during the 25th Democracy Day, urging unity among opposition parties and emphasizing the importance of sustaining democracy.
As Nigeria celebrates 25 years of democracy, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the nation's economic and security challenges.
In his Democracy Day message on Tuesday, Atiku expressed concern over the severe hardships that Nigerians have faced during the APC's nine-year tenure. He stated, "The past nine years have resulted in extreme hardship, manifesting in excruciating poverty and unprecedented levels of violence and insecurity." Atiku held the APC accountable for these difficulties.
The former vice president also addressed the opposition parties, criticizing their failure to form a unified front against the ruling party. He argued that a lack of cohesion and a comprehensive governance plan has weakened public confidence in the opposition's ability to lead.
Reflecting on the importance of June 12, Atiku highlighted the sacrifices made by key figures in Nigeria's fight for democracy, including MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua, and Alfred Rewane. He emphasized that democracy remains the best form of government and called on all stakeholders to protect and sustain it.
"While our current democratic journey is a quarter-century old, it is crucial to honor the sacrifices of numerous patriots," Atiku said. He praised the uninterrupted democratic process of the past 25 years, describing it as an unprecedented achievement in Nigerian history. He urged continued efforts from all political actors and civil society groups to ensure the stability and progress of the nation's democracy.
Atiku's message serves as both a critique of the current administration and a call to action for improved governance and unity among opposition forces.
