Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde remains optimistic about Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, despite their recent 2-1 loss to Benin. On Monday, the Super Eagles took an early lead with Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge scoring from inside the box. However, Benin, managed by ex-Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr, equalized in the 37th minute through Jodei Dossou following a defensive error by Nigeria. Just before halftime, Steve Mounie compounded Nigeria’s misery with a second goal for Benin.
Speaking to Completesports.com, Onigbinde emphasized that while the defeat was disappointing, it didn’t mark the end of Nigeria’s World Cup hopes. “It is still very possible for the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Everything now depends on how we work our way out of this tight corner,” he stated. He acknowledged the setback, expressing disbelief over the loss but maintained a positive outlook: “Notwithstanding, I am still very optimistic that Nigeria will qualify for the 2026 World Cup.”
Fans had mixed reactions to Onigbinde’s comments. One fan expressed doubts about the current coach's abilities, saying, "Not with Finidi as coach!" Another responded skeptically, "Hmmmmmm are you for real? Please go and take your drugs; you need it so badly." A third dismissed Onigbinde's optimism, stating, "Baba still dey dream! Bye! Bye! To 2026 Fifa World Cup."
As the Super Eagles regroup, the support and hope from both past coaches and passionate fans will be crucial in their quest to secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup.
