In the ongoing Bayelsa governorship election, Governor Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. The collation, presided over by the state Returning Officer Prof Faruq Kuta, resumed in Yenagoa after a brief break. Diri garnered 24,685 votes in Southern Ijaw, surpassing Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 18,174 votes.
The Labour Party (LP) secured the third position with 119 votes out of the 50,153 accredited voters. With this result, Governor Diri has now won in six out of the eight local government areas in Bayelsa, while Sylva clinched two. Sylva won in Brass LGA, polling 18,431 votes against Diri's 12,602, and also in Nembe LGA with 22,248 votes, where Diri received 4,556 votes.
