Doyin Okupe denies ever criticizing President Bola Tinubu, stressing their historical bond from the NADECO era. Despite past political differences, Okupe clarifies that he has always supported Tinubu, rejecting any claims of criticism. His recent support follows resignations from the Labour Party and a shift in political alliances.
Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide, has denied ever criticizing President Bola Tinubu. In an interview, Okupe responded to allegations suggesting he had been among Tinubu's former critics who later became his supporters. He emphasized that during the era of military rule in Nigeria, he and Tinubu were in the "trenches" together, facing significant pressures.
Okupe revealed their bond was formed under difficult circumstances during the NADECO era when they were both fighting for democracy—Tinubu abroad and Okupe in Nigeria. He stated that despite their differing political affiliations over the years, he has never criticized Tinubu, citing the strong personal connection they built during those turbulent times.
Reflecting on past political moments, Okupe acknowledged making statements against Tinubu, such as when he criticized the latter’s comments on the national conference proposed by then-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013. He also criticized Tinubu over his remarks on the SURE-P scheme, calling them "ignorant."
However, Okupe has expressed support for Tinubu’s presidency since the 2023 elections. In January 2024, he resigned from the Labour Party after previously stepping down as its presidential campaign director-general in December 2022. Despite the political differences, Okupe has maintained his stance that a "good man" does not "spoil another good person," reaffirming his loyalty to Tinubu.
