Two Nigerian men, Ikemukwu Benjermin Ezirim, 39, and Christian Valentine Uchenna, 37, were arrested in Volkrust, Mpumalanga, South Africa, on drug-related charges. They were caught during a multi-agency operation on November 28, 2024.
The operation was part of a larger initiative by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation and other units. Upon arrest, the suspects tried to dispose of the evidence by flushing some drugs down the toilet. However, further searches uncovered more drugs hidden in the vehicle's body and tyres.
The drugs, valued at R1.2 million (approximately N111 million), were seized, along with R2,000 in cash, five cellphones worth R15,000, a silver weighing scale, and a Mercedes-Benz C180 valued at R400,000. The men, who were also found to be living in South Africa without valid documentation, were charged and detained. They appeared before the Volkrust Magistrate’s Court on November 29, 2024, where they were remanded in custody. Their case will be heard again on December 9, 2024, for a bail application.
The Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, praised the community for providing crucial information that led to the men’s capture and the drug seizure.
