The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Adejuwon Soyinka, the West African editor of The Conversation Africa, after detaining him on Sunday morning at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Soyinka, a former BBC Pidgin service editor, was detained upon his return from the UK.
Initially, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya denied knowledge of the arrest, later confirming it was at the request of another agency. Following intervention by the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, Soyinka was released. His arrest adds to a growing list of journalists targeted by security operatives this year, highlighting increasing concerns about press freedom in Nigeria.
The escalating attacks on journalists, including the arrests of Segun Olatunji, Daniel Ojukwu, and Jamil Mabai earlier this year, have sparked widespread condemnation and fears over the safety of media professionals in the country.
