In a move that has left many Nigerians grappling with financial concerns, Multichoice, the owners of DSTV Nigeria, has announced another subscription fee increase. This hike, which amounts to at least 16 percent depending on the bouquet, follows a previous fee adjustment earlier in the year. DSTV subscribers received notices of the impending price increment on Friday, and the new rates are set to take effect from Monday, November 6, 2023.
Among the changes, the popular DSTV Compact and GOTV Supa+ subscription fee, previously at 10,500 Naira, has risen to 12,500 Naira. The premium DSTV package surged to 29,500 Naira from 24,500 Naira, while the Compact+ package increased to 19,800 Naira from 16,600 Naira. The Confam package now costs 7,400 Naira, up from 6,200 Naira, and Yanga subscribers will see an increase to 4,200 Naira from 3,500 Naira.
For GOTV, the Supa bouquet has increased to 7,600 Naira from 6,400 Naira, Max subscription now stands at 5,700 Naira from 4,850 Naira, the Jolli package is priced at 3,950 Naira from 3,300 Naira, and Jinja was hiked to 2,700 Naira from 2,250 Naira.
This marks the second time that DSTV has announced a subscription fee increase in 2023. The earlier hike raised concerns and drew the attention of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), which had threatened action but did not follow through. DSTV subscribers are now faced with higher costs for their television services, leading to financial hardships for many, and raising questions about the company's pricing policies and the impact on consumers.
