In response to the recent directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), bank customers across the nation are required to link their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) to their accounts. The CBN circular, issued on December 1st, 2023, highlights the significance of this linkage, especially for Tier 1 accounts that necessitate valid identity or proof of address. While certain banks have set a deadline of February 29, 2024, others remain silent on the cutoff date.

To assist individuals in this process, here are the steps to link BVN or NIN to bank accounts:

1. SMS Method:
  • Send a text containing BVN/NIN, your account number, and BVN/NIN number to the specified number or code provided by your service provider or bank.
2. Internet Banking:
  • Log in to your bank's internet banking platform.
  • Select the BVN/NIN option.
  • Click on the new request and enter your BVN/NIN.
  • Choose the bank where your BVN/NIN was issued.
  • Answer secret questions and follow the provided instructions.
3. Email Request:
  • Send an email request to your account officer with the necessary details.
4. Visit Your Bank:
  • Visit your nearest bank branch for assistance in linking your BVN or NIN.
It's crucial to note that Tier 1 accounts, which can be opened with valid identity or proof of address, face restrictions if the BVN is not linked. The maximum daily transaction limit for Tier 1 accounts is N50,000, with a maximum account balance of N300,000.

This comprehensive guide ensures that individuals stay compliant with the CBN directive while navigating the process of linking their NIN and BVN to their bank accounts. Stay informed and financially secure by following these straightforward instructions.
