Amegu Nkalagha community in Ebonyi State was attacked on Sunday, leaving many dead and homes destroyed. The violence is believed to be a reprisal for cattle killings. Authorities are recovering bodies, while police remain unaware. The incident raises concerns over escalating farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria.
The Amegu Nkalagha community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was thrown into mourning on Sunday following a violent attack by suspected armed herdsmen. The assault, which occurred in the early hours, resulted in multiple fatalities and widespread destruction of homes.
According to local sources, the attack may have been a reprisal following the reported killing of cattle in the area. Professor Ndubuisi Idenyi, a resident, confirmed the incident, stating that bodies were still being recovered, particularly from farmlands where some victims were reportedly killed.
A source, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed that the community was not responsible for the cattle deaths, attributing the incident to members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Among the victims was a pastor of a local Pentecostal church, further heightening concerns over the security situation in the region.
The Chairperson of Ishielu Local Government Area, Ifeoma Peace Agwu, confirmed the incident and stated that efforts were underway to transport the victims’ bodies to the morgue. However, she declined to provide further details at the time.
Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that he had yet to receive official reports on the attack. The incident underscores the ongoing tensions between herders and local communities, raising concerns about worsening security challenges in the region.
