The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has not yet received results from the Edo governorship election. REC Anugbum Onuoha emphasized that results are still being processed and warned against premature announcements on social media, reiterating INEC’s exclusive authority to declare official results.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has not yet received any results from the ongoing governorship election across Edo State’s 18 local government areas. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo, clarified during an interview that the counting process is still underway at the ward level and must progress to the local government stage before reaching the state collation center.
Onuoha stated that it is too early to predict when the official results will be released and urged the public to be patient as the election is still being processed. He voiced his concern regarding individuals on social media who are prematurely announcing results, reiterating that only INEC is authorized to declare the official outcomes. “Those sharing results are stepping outside their responsibilities,” he noted, stressing the importance of following legal protocols related to election announcements.
As of September 21, 2024, INEC has uploaded over 90% of the polling unit result sheets to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), with a total of 3,995 out of 4,519 polling units reported. This election involves 2,249,780 registered voters and features 17 candidates. Analysts expect a competitive race among Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, as the current governor, Godwin Obaseki, nears the end of his two-term limit on November 12, 2024.
