Henry Okojie, a federal lawmaker representing Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency in Edo State and husband of actress Mercy Johnson, narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt at his residence. The incident, which occurred on September 20, involved armed men who were suspected political thugs. According to Okojie's media aide, Michael Ihaza, the attackers arrived in a Lexus GX 470 with Rivers State plates (PHC 253 FF) and posed as police officers before entering Okojie's residence under the pretext of having an appointment.

The swift intervention of security personnel attached to Okojie thwarted the assassination attempt. While two armed men fled the scene, their driver and another accomplice were captured and are currently being questioned by the Nigeria Police Force's Area Command in Uromi.

This assassination attempt comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Edo election, with allegations of political violence being a recurring issue. Okojie’s camp has urged the public to stay vigilant, while also thanking the security team for their prompt action in preventing what could have been a tragic incident. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible and uncover any political motivations behind the attack.
