Voters in Edo State cast their ballots to choose a successor for the current governor, Godwin Obaseki, who will complete his two terms on November 12, 2024. This election is crucial as Edo is one of eight states holding off-season governorship elections due to various legal challenges. The total number of registered voters in the state stands at 2,629,025, with 2,249,780 (85.57%) having obtained their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs).
The race features 17 candidates, but analysts have identified three key contenders: Asue Ighodalo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP). Ighodalo, endorsed by Obaseki, is positioned against Okpebholo, backed by former governor Adams Oshiomhole, and Akpata, who enjoys support from 2023 LP presidential candidate Peter Obi.
This election highlights a dynamic political landscape, with each candidate vying for critical voter support in this pivotal state.
