Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki has accused the APC of violent tactics ahead of the September 21 governorship election, warning that rigging could spark a national crisis. The APC's alleged violent actions and attempts to spin Obaseki’s comments have heightened political tensions in Edo State.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has clarified his recent remarks regarding the upcoming governorship election, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of using violence to influence the results.

In a statement made during a July 21, 2024, meeting in Benin City, Obaseki warned that failing to ensure a free and fair election on September 21, 2024, could ignite a nationwide crisis. The APC initially misinterpreted the governor’s comments, leading to heightened tensions.

Chris Nehikhare, Edo State Commissioner for Communication, condemned the APC’s attempt to spin Obaseki’s words and highlighted recent violent incidents allegedly instigated by the APC, including the death of a police officer and attacks on public and private properties. The APC has been accused of orchestrating chaos to manipulate the election process, prompting concerns about potential widespread unrest.

Nehikhare urged the APC to reconsider its tactics, warning that irresponsible actions could exacerbate national instability amid economic hardships. Meanwhile, the courts rejected former deputy governor Philip Shaibu's attempt to challenge the PDP's nomination of Asue Ighodalo, further complicating the political landscape.
