Ahead of the Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has implemented a restriction of movement to ensure a smooth voting process. In a statement released on Friday, the IGP announced that all vehicular traffic on roads and waterways will be limited from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on election day.

Exceptions will be made for essential services, including accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders. Additionally, security aides and escorts for VIPs will be prohibited from entering polling stations and collation centers. Unauthorized security personnel are banned from operating, and the use of sirens by non-authorized vehicles will not be permitted, aimed at maintaining a peaceful environment for voters.

The IGP emphasized the need for accessibility at polling stations, particularly for individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and the elderly. Citizens have been urged to avoid prank calls to control rooms and instead use text messages for reporting.

The police have also set up a joint control room, staffed by police and relevant agencies, to monitor the electoral process. The IGP has called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to act responsibly and adhere to electoral laws, warning that any disruptions will face legal consequences. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to ensuring that the elections are conducted safely and fairly.
