In the ongoing Edo State governorship election held on September 21, 2024, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, has defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo in Oredo Local Government Area, home of the outgoing Governor, Godwin Obaseki. Despite Obaseki’s solid support for Ighodalo, the APC garnered 30,780 votes, while the PDP secured 24,938.

The Labour Party's Olumide Akpata trailed with 5,389 votes. The election, which is off-season due to earlier litigation, saw voters from across the state head to polling units to choose a successor for Obaseki, whose term concludes on November 12, 2024. Edo is one of eight states with off-season elections, and the race has largely been seen as a contest between the APC, PDP, and Labour Party.

As vote counts continue, Okpebholo’s victory in Oredo comes as a significant blow to Obaseki’s camp. INEC reported that over 2.6 million voters were registered, and 85.57% of them hold Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs). With results from other local governments still being awaited, the race remains tight between the three leading candidates.
