The Nigeria Police arrested two suspected political thugs in Edo State during overnight raids aimed at curbing electoral violence. Firearms were recovered, and the police are committed to ensuring a peaceful governorship election. Authorities have urged citizens to report suspicious activities to maintain the integrity of the voting process.

In a preemptive move to maintain peace during the ongoing Edo State governorship election, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has apprehended two suspected political thugs during overnight raids. The arrests were made after a tip-off alerted authorities to potential electoral violence.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the operation led to the arrest of two individuals identified as Edwin Obanor, 43, and Audu Tajudeen, 41, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Both men were apprehended in Ugbogbo Quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo. The police also seized firearms during the operation, underscoring their ongoing efforts to curb electoral-related violence.

This development comes as the people of Edo State head to the polls to elect their next governor. With heightened political tensions between major parties such as the All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP, and the Labour Party, security concerns have been at the forefront of the election process.

The police spokesperson reaffirmed the commitment of the security forces to ensuring a peaceful and transparent election. Working in collaboration with other security personnel, law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to prevent disruptions and safeguard voters.

As the situation unfolds, the NPF continues to urge the public to report any suspicious activity that could compromise the election’s integrity. Authorities also stressed that further arrests and operations will be conducted to ensure that all forms of electoral misconduct are addressed.

This arrest signals a clear warning to those attempting to disrupt the democratic process in Edo.
