Authorities at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have responded to the arrest of some students by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on suspicion of their involvement in internet fraud. The EFCC confirmed the arrest of 69 individuals in Osun State, stating that they were suspected of engaging in fraudulent internet activities.

OAU's public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, emphasized the university's commitment to safeguarding the interests of innocent students. He also pledged cooperation with the EFCC to prosecute those found guilty.

The arrest of the suspects led to the creation of the hashtag #FreeOAUStudents on social media. According to reports, EFCC officials conducted a raid on student hostels in the Oduduwa estate near the university. Although those arrested were primarily OAU students, the area is home to multiple tertiary institutions, including Oduduwa University.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the EFCC's actions, describing the arrest as an "unlawful invasion of the students' hostels." NANS accused the EFCC of kidnapping over 80 students and called for a peaceful protest at the EFCC zonal headquarters in Ibadan, Oyo State.

OAU's spokesperson, Mr. Olarewaju, stated that the university was sending representatives to verify the number of its students arrested and to provide support. He emphasized that the university would not shield anyone involved in criminal activities but would protect the rights of innocent students. The situation has triggered strong reactions, with students and NANS demanding justice and the release of the detained students
