Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), unveiled details of a formidable religious sect's ability to secure a court order preventing the investigation of N7 billion funds linked to terrorists.
The EFCC, engaged in probing a massive N13 billion fraud, discovered the substantial connection to the religious body's account during the inquiry. The disclosure took place at a youth-focused event in Abuja themed "Youth, Religion, and the Fight Against Corruption." While the chairman refrained from naming the specific sect and terrorists involved, he emphasized that various religious entities have been implicated in money laundering activities.
Expressing frustration, Olukoyede revealed that the EFCC faced legal constraints when a restraining order halted the investigation into the money laundering activities associated with the religious organization.
The revelation raises concerns about the extent of financial involvement by religious bodies in supporting terrorism and poses significant challenges for anti-corruption efforts in the country.
