The probe seeks details on funds from FIFA, CAF, sponsors, and accounts for major tournaments. This move aims to improve financial accountability in the Nigerian football administration.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over allegations of fund mismanagement and abuse of office. The probe aims to uncover the details surrounding funds received and utilized by the NFF and the Professional Football League.
A letter addressed to the National Sports Commission (NSC) dated November 28, 2024, and signed by Farouk Dogondaji on behalf of the EFCC chairman, sought detailed financial records. The EFCC is requesting information on donations and sponsorships received by the NFF since 2022, including funds from FIFA and CAF for major tournaments such as the 2023 Women's World Cup and the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The anti-corruption agency has asked for records of the bank accounts where these funds were deposited and the disbursements made to the NFF for tournament preparations. Additionally, the EFCC is investigating companies contracted as consultants for both the NFF and the Professional Football League, emphasizing the need for transparency.
The EFCC stated that the request aligns with sections 38 (1) and (2) of the EFCC Establishment Act of 2004.
