The EFCC has placed former Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki on its watch list amid investigations into alleged financial misconduct during his tenure. The anti-graft agency is probing contracts and transactions, while Obaseki maintains his willingness to cooperate. Edo’s new administration has also initiated a verification committee to review state assets
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly placed former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on its watch list as it investigates financial activities and contracts from his time in office. Obaseki, who completed his eight-year tenure on November 12, had previously expressed awareness of possible scrutiny by the anti-graft agency.
Sources reveal that the EFCC has started reviewing transactions carried out during Obaseki’s administration, including significant withdrawals and contract awards. A team of investigators has been tasked with analyzing these transactions, although there is no direct evidence linking the former governor to irregularities at this stage.
During his tenure, Obaseki emphasized transparency, yet his administration has faced criticism for alleged financial misconduct. Shortly before leaving office, five officials, including the Accountant General of Edo State, were arrested for questionable financial activities. Obaseki, however, maintains his readiness to cooperate with the investigation and insists he has nothing to hide.
Meanwhile, the new Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has established a 14-member committee to verify state assets. This move further places a spotlight on Obaseki’s administration, as stakeholders demand accountability for government transactions.
EFCC insiders clarified that placing former governors on a watch list is a routine measure to ensure they remain within reach during investigations. As the probe continues, the EFCC aims to unravel the details of the contracts and financial dealings tied to Obaseki's leadership.
Efforts to contact EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for updates were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
