Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen backs Victor Boniface despite his struggles to find form with the national team. Following a 2-1 loss to Rwanda in AFCON qualifiers, Eguavoen emphasizes confidence-building for Boniface, who has yet to score in 11 appearances but remains a key part of the squad.
Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has voiced support for Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface despite the striker’s underwhelming performances with the national team.
In a shocking 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in Uyo on Monday, Nigeria concluded their 2025 AFCON Group D qualifiers. Samuel Chukwueze initially gave the hosts the lead, but Rwanda staged a remarkable comeback with goals from Aimable Mutinzi and Imanishimwe Nshuti. Despite the loss, Nigeria had already secured qualification for the tournament in Morocco.
Addressing Boniface’s struggles, Eguavoen acknowledged the striker’s difficulty in replicating his Bundesliga success with Bayer Leverkusen, where he has shone this season. Boniface has yet to score for the Super Eagles in 11 appearances since his debut in September 2023.
Eguavoen emphasized his efforts to boost Boniface’s confidence through consistent playing time and discussions. “He’s capable of great things at his club, and we try to give him the same confidence here,” the coach stated. However, the 22-year-old has yet to establish chemistry with the team, drawing comparisons to Victor Osimhen, who enjoys a strong rapport with fans.
Despite criticism, Eguavoen reaffirmed his commitment to Boniface, insisting he remains part of the squad for future matches. "He’s still part of the team and will continue to be,” Eguavoen said.
