The Zamfara Police have identified the Lakurawa terrorist group as the culprits behind the deadly Gusau-Dansadau bridge bombing that killed eight people. Authorities confirmed the group’s recent migration from Niger Republic and dismissed local bandits' involvement, citing their lack of expertise in making explosives. Security measures are being heightened.
The Zamfara State Police Command has attributed the bombing of the Gusau-Dansadau bridge in the Maru Local Government Area to the Lakurawa terrorist group. The explosion, which occurred on Wednesday, claimed the lives of eight commuters traveling in a Golf car and left three others critically injured.
Speaking on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily program, Police Commissioner Muhammad Dalijan disclosed that the Lakurawa group, recently displaced by military operations in Sokoto and Kebbi states, was responsible for the attack. He noted that members of the group were seen in the area shortly before the explosion.
Dalijan explained that the terrorists while moving toward the Birnin-Gwari forest, planted an explosive device under the bridge. “A motorist unknowingly triggered the device, leading to the tragic incident,” he said. The commissioner ruled out the involvement of local bandits, stating that they lacked the expertise to manufacture or deploy such explosives.
This attack marks a disturbing escalation in tactics, as the use of explosives is a new phenomenon in Zamfara State. Dalijan emphasized that the police are confident the Lakurawa group was behind the bombing, as reports indicated their movement through the area before the incident.
The Lakurawa terrorists, believed to have migrated from Niger Republic, have been active in parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states. The Defense Headquarters had recently confirmed their presence in the region following intensified military operations against their hideouts. Authorities are now focused on countering this emerging threat in Zamfara State.
