Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai dismisses merger speculations and urges opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to join the SDP. He criticizes APC’s direction and hints at the party as an alternative for 2027. While Buhari remains loyal to APC, El-Rufai's move could shift political dynamics.
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has downplayed speculations about a political merger, instead inviting key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, and Rotimi Amaechi, to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai, who recently left the All Progressives Congress (APC), cited deep disagreements with the ruling party’s direction as his reason for switching allegiance. In an interview with BBC Hausa, he stated that the SDP could serve as a viable alternative to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
“My wish and prayer is for opposition leaders to join the SDP—not to form a merger or create a new party, but to build a strong alternative,” he said.
He also explained that his initial support for Tinubu’s presidency was based on the latter’s achievements as Lagos State governor, but he now believes the APC has strayed from its values.
Addressing speculation about his presidential ambitions, El-Rufai emphasized that the decision rests with the party and the electorate. He recalled that even his gubernatorial bid in Kaduna was influenced by others, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, who encouraged him to run.
Despite his departure, Buhari has reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC, signaling a divide between former allies. El-Rufai’s move could significantly alter Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
