Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has vowed political payback for the arrest of his ally, Bashir Saidu, who spent 50 days in detention. Accusing security and judicial officials of misconduct, El-Rufai warns of consequences before the 2027 elections. Saidu was released after meeting bail conditions.

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has criticized the arrest and detention of his political ally, Bashir Saidu, vowing that those responsible will face consequences before the 2027 elections.

Saidu, a former Commissioner for Finance and Local Government Affairs under El-Rufai’s administration, was arrested in January on allegations of money laundering. He was held for 50 days before meeting bail conditions and securing his release on Wednesday.

El-Rufai, welcoming Saidu back, denounced the detention as politically motivated. He revealed that their friendship dates back over five decades, describing Saidu as a key figure in Kaduna’s progressive political landscape.

In a statement, the former governor accused certain law enforcement officers and judicial figures of deliberately stalling Saidu’s bail process. He asserted that their actions were aimed at suppressing his political influence.

“The details of this injustice will come to light soon,” El-Rufai declared. “Those who orchestrated this will understand the meaning of accountability before the 2027 elections.”

Saidu was arrested by security operatives and charged by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Despite meeting bail requirements, his release was delayed due to alleged interference from judicial authorities.

Upon his return home, Saidu was greeted by supporters, family, and political associates, who celebrated his freedom. His detention has sparked debates over the use of state institutions for political rivalries.

El-Rufai maintained that he would not remain silent, promising to expose those behind what he described as an abuse of power. His remarks suggest that the coming political season in Kaduna may be marked by increased tensions and potential political confrontations.
