Twelve Nigerian universities have been selected to lead the country’s push toward electric vehicle (EV) production, with support from the Bank of Industry. The initiative aligns with Tinubu’s “First Nigeria Policy” and aims for 100% locally made EVs.

  • Two universities from each geopolitical zone were selected.
  • Project supported by the NADDC and the Bank of Industry.
  • Focus on EV design, component manufacturing, and after-sales parts.
  • 10 universities already have charging stations installed.
  • Goal: Locally built 100% electric university shuttle buses.

This EV initiative could be Nigeria’s breakout moment in auto-tech, if sustained. By leveraging universities and assembling key partnerships, the FG is betting on local innovation and industrial self-reliance. But beyond design, long-term support, local supply chains, and consistent funding will determine success.

Nigeria’s push to join the global electric vehicle movement is real and growing. With the infrastructure groundwork underway and student talent mobilised, the road to Made-in-Nigeria EVs could be shorter than expected—if momentum holds.
