The Federal Government has designated all 256 Nigerian correctional centres as red zones in anticipation of the August 1 nationwide protests. This move, announced by Haliru Nababa of the Nigeria Correctional Service, aims to enhance security and prevent disruptions, with additional measures from the Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce.

In a proactive measure ahead of the nationwide protests planned for August 1, the Federal Government has designated all 256 correctional centres across Nigeria as “red zones.” This designation, announced by Haliru Nababa, the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), aims to safeguard these critical facilities against potential disruptions.

Nababa’s statement, released on Tuesday, underscores the heightened security concerns linked to the upcoming protests. He emphasized that any unauthorized individuals or groups should avoid approaching the correctional centres to prevent possible breaches of security. According to Nababa, the potential for unrest and attacks on these facilities could significantly destabilize the nation and worsen existing security challenges.

The NCoS has implemented extensive security measures to protect the custodial centres. This includes the activation of the Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce (MOIJTF), which will provide additional security personnel and resources to ensure the safety of these facilities.

Nababa also appealed to the public to support the security measures and refrain from actions that might jeopardize the stability of the correctional system. The announcement highlights the government's commitment to maintaining public safety and order amidst the anticipated protests.

In response to the government's actions, observers and stakeholders are closely monitoring how this heightened security posture will influence the upcoming protests and the overall public reaction.
