#Endbadgovernance protest organizers have written to the Nigerian Police seeking security for their October 1 demonstration. The protest aims to challenge President Tinubu's economic policies, including fuel price hikes and inflation. Organizers urge Nigerians to join the peaceful protest, demanding better governance and the release of detained protesters.
Organizers of the #Endbadgovernance protest have written to the Nigerian Police, seeking security for their planned demonstration on October 1, 2024. The protest is in response to widespread dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu's economic policies, which organizers claim have exacerbated hardship in the country.
Groups such as the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), and Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) have united to push for the protest. They highlighted the need for police protection by the Police Establishment Act of 2020, which obliges law enforcement to ensure the safety of peaceful protesters.
Hassan Soweto, ERC’s National Coordinator, urged Nigerians to join the protest, which will kick off at 7:30 a.m. under the Ikeja bridge. The protest aims to draw attention to economic challenges, including rising fuel prices, inflation, and the high cost of living, which have worsened since recent government actions.
Organizers also criticized the government for not addressing their concerns raised during earlier protests in August, known as the "Ten Days of rage." They condemned extravagant government spending while ordinary Nigerians continued to suffer. The protest will call for the release of #EndSARS protesters and other political detainees still held in custody.
October 1 has been designated a "National Day of Survival," as organizers rally against fuel price hikes, electricity tariff increases, and other "anti-poor" economic policies. They encourage all Nigerians, particularly workers, students, and traders, to participate peacefully.
