In response to the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced free legal support for protesters whose rights may be violated. NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, through the association’s National Publicity Secretary Akorede Lawal, outlined that directives have been issued to all 130 NBA branch chairpersons to address any cases of fundamental rights violations related to the protests.
Participants are urged to protest peacefully, while law enforcement is called upon to uphold professional standards and respect citizens' rights. To monitor the situation, the NBA has established a Situation Monitoring Committee and provided an online form for reporting any incidents of rights violations or harassment.
The NBA has also set up Legal Support Services Teams, led by First Vice President Linda Rose Bala, NBA-SPIDEL Chairman Sir Steve Adehi (SAN), and NBA Human Rights Institute Chairman Mr. Chinonye Obiagwu (SAN). These teams will coordinate nationwide legal support efforts. Additionally, the NBA President has reached out to the Inspector General of Police to collaborate on ensuring lawful and respectful enforcement.
The hunger protests, aimed at highlighting economic hardships faced by Nigerians, are scheduled to take place across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory from August 1 to August 10, 2024.
