The victim is receiving treatment, while officials stress the need to combat gender-based violence and protect women's rights statewide.
The Enugu State Government has pledged to prosecute Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi, a man accused of severing his wife’s hand in a violent domestic attack. The incident occurred in Ibagwa Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area, following a dispute.
The victim, Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, is currently receiving treatment at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital after being transferred from a local clinic. The suspect, who initially fled after the attack, has since been apprehended.
Ngozi Enih, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, visited the victim in the hospital and condemned the "barbaric" act. She emphasized the urgent need to address gender-based violence (GBV) in the state.
Enih assured the public that the state government is committed to ensuring justice is served and that the victim receives necessary support. She called on community leaders and stakeholders to collaborate in combating GBV and protecting women’s rights.
“This horrific act is a stark reminder that violence against women is unacceptable,” Enih stated. “Perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.”
The government also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards GBV, urging society to take a stand against such abuses
