Erisco Foods is under scrutiny as Nigerians consider boycotting the brand due to its continued persecution of online reviewer Chioma Okoli. The issue began in September when Erisco Foods' CEO threatened Okoli with a N5 billion lawsuit over her negative review of the company's Tomato Paste.
Despite Okoli's apologies, Erisco's CEO affirmed the legal pursuit on national television. A video of Okoli emotionally responding to the lawsuit further fueled public discontent. Legal action escalated with the Inspector General of Police filing a "cybercrime" charge against Okoli, reaching the Federal High Court on February 29, 2024.
On Saturday, Nigerians mobilized on social media, including X account, calling for a boycott of Erisco Foods. Influential figures like activist Dele Farotimi criticized Erisco for being oppressive and irresponsible in its response to Okoli's review.
Prominent social media users joined the chorus, expressing solidarity with Okoli and condemning Erisco for alleged bullying. The boycott movement gains traction, posing a dual challenge for Erisco Foods — not only dealing with legal proceedings but also navigating a significant public relations crisis that could impact its standing among Nigerian consumers.
