The Digest:

Former Aviation Minister Stella Oduah and her co-defendant Gloria Odita have commenced steps to return some of the alleged N2.5 billion looted funds to the Nigerian government amid settlement talks over fraud charges. Director of Public Prosecution Rotimi Oyedepo informed the FCT High Court on Thursday that "the defendants have made a move to refund a certain amount of the money into the government coffers." While the amount refunded remains undisclosed, Oyedepo stated what is left "is the confirmation of receipt of the bank draft by the government." Defence lawyers confirmed the development but refrained from providing further details. The development follows a plea bargain-related application submitted to the Attorney-General under Section 270 of the ACJA 2015. The terms of the agreement remain secret. Oduah and Odita were arraigned in December 2025 on five counts of fraudulently obtaining N2.5 billion disguised as "cost of technical supervision and security" from the Ministry of Aviation. The court adjourned to March 26 for a status report.

Key Points
  • The refund move suggests Oduah is negotiating to avoid trial, likely through plea bargain.
  • The secrecy of terms raises questions about transparency in high-profile corruption cases.
  • The N2.5 billion sum was allegedly obtained through false pretence from the aviation ministry.
  • The March 26 adjournment will reveal whether charges will be dropped or reduced.
  • Oduah faces separate N5 billion money laundering charges in another court.
Stella Oduah takes steps to return alleged looted N2.5 billion as she negotiates with the AGF, a move that could see fraud charges resolved behind closed doors, away from public scrutiny.
