Former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, has accused suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of instigating the state's ongoing political crisis. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Nwaeke alleged that Fubara worked behind the scenes to destabilize the state in a bid to avoid impeachment. He claimed that the suspended governor ordered his chief of staff, Edison Ehie, to set fire to the Rivers State House of Assembly complex and even facilitated the act by handing over a bag of money for the operation.
According to Nwaeke, a second attempt was made to destroy the assembly members' residential quarters, but it was thwarted after public outcry from Rivers elders, youths, and federal lawmakers. He described Fubara’s actions as a "deliberate posture of innocence" while allegedly working to demolish state assets and escalate tensions.
Beyond the political crisis, Nwaeke accused Fubara of collaborating with militants, alleging that the governor held secret meetings with armed groups and channeled large sums of money into their activities. He claimed that Fubara spoke of using Ijaw militias to influence Nigeria’s future leadership and plotted to destroy oil facilities to create further instability.
Furthermore, Nwaeke stated that Fubara had "nocturnal meetings" with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, allegedly discussing political alliances. He warned President Bola Tinubu and the newly appointed Rivers State administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), to remain vigilant against further disruptions.
Nwaeke maintained that his resignation was voluntary, emphasizing that the emergency rule imposed by Tinubu had helped to prevent further chaos in the state. His explosive allegations have added a new dimension to the already tense political situation in Rivers.
