Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili has harshly criticized President Bola Tinubu and the political elite in Nigeria, likening them to “bandits” for prioritizing the purchase of a new presidential jet amid widespread poverty and hardship in the country.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ezekwesili expressed outrage over the decision, particularly in light of the current economic struggles that many Nigerians face.

The controversy surrounding the acquisition of the aircraft has sparked public outcry, with many questioning the rationale behind such expenditures when essential needs remain unmet. In response, Tinubu’s aide, Bayo Onanuga, defended the purchase, claiming the government secured the jet at a price below its market value.

Ezekwesili, however, urged Nigerians not to sympathize with Tinubu, stating that his actions mirror those of former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose tenure was also marked by similar decisions. She pointed to the extravagant spending by the political class, including plans for expensive homes for officials, as further evidence of misplaced priorities.

With many citizens grappling with severe economic challenges, Ezekwesili's comments resonate with growing frustrations over the political leadership's focus on luxury rather than addressing pressing societal needs.
