Femi Falana plans to sue Ibrahim Babangida for his 1993 arrest and prosecution after the annulment of the June 12 election. With Babangida admitting Moshood Abiola’s victory, Falana argues that his detention was unjust. He is assembling a legal team to challenge the human rights violations committed during the era.

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has announced plans to sue former military leader, Ibrahim Babangida, over his arrest and prosecution in 1993. Falana's decision follows Babangida’s recent admission that Moshood Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Speaking in an interview, Falana criticized Babangida’s justification for annulling the election, dismissing claims that external forces pressured him into the decision. He described the annulment as a deliberate move against democracy, revealing that he, along with other activists, was detained for publishing the election results.

Falana recalled being arrested alongside notable figures like Gani Fawehinmi and Beko Ransome-Kuti, transported to Abuja, and charged with sedition. Later, they were accused of treason and held in Kuje Prison. Despite these charges, he and his colleagues used their court appearances to challenge the military government, arguing that those truly guilty of treason were in power at the time.

With Babangida now admitting that Abiola was the rightful winner, Falana insists there was no legal basis for their prosecution. He has assembled a team of lawyers to pursue justice, arguing that their arrests and detentions amounted to human rights violations. He emphasized that the right to liberty and democratic participation was denied to him and others.

Falana also referenced international human rights laws, stating that serious human rights violations have no statute of limitations. He remains determined to hold Babangida accountable for his role in suppressing Nigeria’s democracy.
