On March 1, 2025, a tragic accident on the Benin-Auchi road claimed the lives of 12 passengers. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. near the Igueoviobo community, close to an army checkpoint. A Toyota Hiace bus, traveling from Zuba (FCT) to Benin, collided with an oncoming truck heading to Auchi.
According to Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Edo Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew, the crash was likely caused by driver fatigue, with the driver potentially falling asleep at the wheel. The collision resulted in a fire, engulfing the bus and making it impossible for anyone to survive. All 12 passengers, whose identities were later confirmed via the vehicle's manifest, perished in the blaze.
The truck driver and his assistant, however, escaped unhurt. The FRSC has since reached out to the victims' families. Mathew urged long-distance drivers to take necessary precautions, particularly ensuring they rest when feeling fatigued, to avoid similar incidents in the future.
