In an exclusive interview with Trust TV on Wednesday, Joseph Aloba, father of the late Afrobeat sensation Mohbad, voiced dissatisfaction with the ongoing police investigation into his son's untimely death. Mohbad, whose real name is Ilerioluwa Promise Aloba, passed away on September 12, 2023, sparking a series of allegations and arrests involving key figures in the music industry.
The owner of Mohbad's former record label, Marlian Records, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, and Sam Larry were accused of involvement in Mohbad's death. Both denied any wrongdoing, and after being arrested and arraigned, they were released on bail. The nurse who administered injections to Mohbad was identified as a prime suspect.
In response to public outcry, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, ordered a forensic investigation. The Lagos State Police Command established a 10-man team, including a pathologist, to exhume Mohbad's corpse and probe the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Lagos Coroner Court reported progress in November 2023, stating that the external autopsy had been completed in Nigeria, with the toxicology test ongoing in the United States. However, despite the ongoing investigation, Mohbad's father expressed dissatisfaction with the police's handling of the case.
"I am not satisfied with police investigation. A lot of things have been said outside which are not really right," said Joseph Aloba. He highlighted unmet expectations regarding a search of Mohbad's residence and the non-receipt of the police autopsy report.
Aloba called for a more thorough investigation, urging the police to question those who lived with Mohbad. He emphasized the importance of examining their phones to uncover crucial information related to Mohbad's demise.
As calls for the release of the autopsy report persist, Mohbad's father implored the government to intensify efforts to ensure a fair and transparent investigation. He emphasized the urgency, stating, "Delay can result in denial."
Efforts to obtain an update from the police spokesman in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The interview underscores the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the investigation into Mohbad's death and the quest for justice by his grieving father.
