Ayodele Fayose questions the feasibility of the Supreme Court's LG financial autonomy ruling, citing state-administrative ties and local governance challenges on Channels TV.
Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti state, has expressed skepticism over the practicality of the Supreme Court's recent decision granting financial autonomy to Nigeria's 744 local government areas (LGAs).
Speaking on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Fayose acknowledged the importance of local government funds remaining intact but argued that the close administrative ties between states and LGAs make complete autonomy challenging.
He highlighted the role of state governors in the appointment and oversight of local government officials, emphasizing that effective governance at the local level requires closer state involvement. Fayose also criticized absenteeism among LG staff and alleged widespread financial irregularities within local administrations.
