The Digest:
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won four chairmanship seats in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing one, as results from Kuje are still awaited. INEC conducted polls across the six area councils: AMAC, Bwari, Kwali, Abaji, Gwagwalada, and Kuje. In AMAC, incumbent Christopher Maikalangu (APC) was reelected with 40,295 votes, defeating ADC's 12,109 and PDP's 3,398. Joshua Ishaku (APC) won Bwari with 18,466 votes. Daniel Nuhu (APC) secured Kwali with 17,032 votes against PDP's 8,575. Umar Abdullahi Abubakar (APC) won Abaji with 15,535 votes. The PDP's sole victory came in Gwagwalada, where Mohammed Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat the APC's 17,788. Voter turnout was low, with AMAC recording only 65,676 accredited voters out of 837,338 registered.
Key Points:
- APC's four wins consolidate ruling party dominance in the nation's capital.
- PDP's Gwagwalada victory prevents a clean sweep and provides opposition foothold.
- APC strengthens position, while PDP builds on sole win for 2027.
- This signals the political landscape in FCT ahead of the general elections.
- The timing, with the Kuje result pending, shows APC likely to extend its lead.
