Gunmen hijacked a Benue Links bus in Otukpo, Benue State, killing the driver and kidnapping all passengers, sparing only a toddler. The incident has sparked public outrage, with local leaders criticizing the government’s inaction. Security forces have launched investigations, but no official statement has been released yet.
A routine journey turned tragic on Thursday night in Ikobi, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, when gunmen intercepted a Benue Links commercial bus, fatally shooting the driver and abducting all passengers onboard. In a heartbreaking but puzzling decision, the assailants spared a toddler.
Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred along a quiet stretch of highway where the attackers laid in wait. The bus, reportedly full, was forced to stop before the driver was shot at close range. The passengers were then marched into nearby bushland by the gunmen.
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. As of Friday morning, security operatives had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, but there was no official confirmation from state authorities at the time this report was filed.
Community leaders and youth groups expressed outrage over the escalating violence in the region. Mike Magaji, President of the Ochetoha K’Idoma Youth Wing, criticized the state government's silence and described Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recent visit to the area as underwhelming.
“Our people are dying, and yet there’s no urgency from those in power,” Magaji said. “We need more than empty visits and vague promises. We need results.” Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command said it was still gathering details about the attack. Police spokesperson Catherine Anene noted that while unverified reports had reached the command, official confirmation was still pending.
